... From The Co-Chair of Big Sing 2008 ...

... I have attended and sung in many types of performances over my singing life and this is up there with the "top 10".
Dr. Gary Schwartzhoff's Singing Statesmen were awesome!! They sang the Armed Service Medley with vets standing ... very inspiring ... introduced by a Lance Corporal of Marines, a member of the Statesmen. The Statesmen joined the Massed Chorus for Zion's Walls and that put our number at about 450 singers for that piece.
Over $3500 was collected for the scholarship fund ... two of last year's winners performed for the guys in the afternoon rehearsal ... Stephanie Benson, a scholarship winner, sang an aria, which made your jaw drop.
There were over 700 persons at the Afterglow ... probably about that same number for the Friday night recital. We had 200 packets of music for the sight reading session Saturday morning and ran out of packets and had to bring in chairs to the hall for the session. There were 192 at the Ladies Luncheon ... and about 1200 were in the audience for the Saturday concert ... I had hoped for more but it was the best crowd in my memory and bigger than our last Big Sing in 2002.
The major concern was that the Pepsi machine malfunctioned while people were in line at the afterglow. OOPs!
All in all I am still on an adrenalin high, but coming down to earth as I write thank yous and we start to pay the bills.
Our guys and their spouses and families deserve tons of credit for a job well done.

Comments: Wow. That is what I was feeling Sunday morning when I was leaving Eau Claire. From the start of Friday night until the end of the Afterglow everything ran smooth.
So much music to listen to and to sing, that is the best part of Big Sings and this one was right up there with the best.
I like the idea of the Statesman preforming for the concert and I hope they enjoy listening to the mass chorus numbers. They are the future of the AMC of A and I hope the love of singing will make them find choruses to join after college.
Once more, WOW!!!

Comments: Congratulations to the Eau Claire Male Chorus on an excellent Big Sing. From the Friday Evening Recital through the Saturday Afterglow, every element of this wonderful week-end was well planned and executed. The Scholarship collection of over $3,500 was unprecedented. You ought to feel very proud of your wonderful achievements.

Stan Carlson, Staples, really works at recruiting "young" singers!

Wonder what "part" he will sing?

The Awakening - Big Sing 2008

Big Sing 2008
in Eau Claire, WI
on April 25-26, 2008

The Awakening
(Director Performance Notes)
David Fehr

Hi! The Awakening should be pretty straight forward. Most of the rubato is between the myself and the piano. Dynamics should be followed as written.

  1. There are some additional phrasings to include.
These are equivalent to eighth rests:
    Measures 85 (after beat one), 97, 99, 101, 106, 108, 110.

  2. These are equivalent to quarter rests:
    Measures 91, 93, 95.

  3. These measure will NOT includes breathes: 16, 18, 52, 103, 112, and one just for the 1st tenors, measure 83.

  4. Special places:
Ms. 24 - we will not attempt the quintuplet; perform as even eighth notes

Ms. 70 and 72 - the "silent" will be done as two eighth notes with the "t" coming squarely on beat four of the measure

Ms. 76 - please reinforce the mp dynamic at this point; this begins a two-page crescendo

Ms. 80-85 for the basses - I've never worried about breathing in section and I'm not going to start now; basses are on their own

Ms. 97 and 106 - these will have a pretty serious ritard so we can get the breath in; beat four will be in the slower tempo; a tempo at the downbeat of the next measure

Ms. 102-105, 111-114 - these four measure phrases will have a slight accelerando

I think that's it. Maybe not as straight forward as I thought, but there it is. I would love to tell the massed choruses that the "k" in "awake" and the "v" in "live" is actually too strong. Oh well, we can all dream, right?

Any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
