The Winter Blahs

If you, like me, reside in a part of the country where winters can be long and severe, you may already be tired of winter AND we've just reached February! At my home in Cedar Glen which is near Dunsford, Ontario, the snow fell in late November and never left. Our driveway resembles a tunnel with snow piled high on either side beginning at the garage and stretching down to the road, a distance of about one hundred feet.

I retired to my present location in 1989 and the other day looked up my diary entries for that year and thought you might find some of them interesting.

August 12: Moved to our new home on Sturgeon Lake near Dunsford, Ontario. It's so beautiful here. The woods are at our back and we front on the lake's rippling blue expanse. I can hardly wait to see snow. We love it here.

October 12: Cedar Glen is the most beautiful place on earth. The leaves have turned color - red sumacs along the lake and rusty orange leaves fill the woods. We went for a ride in the country and saw some deer. They are so graceful. We really love it here.

November 3: Deer season just started. I don't know how people can shoot such a beautiful animal. Hope it snows soon.

December 6: Snowed last night. Woke up to find the whole place blanketed in white. It looks like a postcard! Went out and shoveled the driveway. We had a snowball fight, I won! When the snowplow came we got to shovel again. What a great place - we love Cedar Glen!

December 14: The ice has formed on the lake and we had more snow last night. A gentle breeze swirled the snow across the lake creating a beautiful picturesque scene. The snowplow did his trick to the driveway again. It's so pretty and peaceful here.

December 17: More snow last night and the winds howling across the lake created huge drifts. Couldn't get out of the driveway to get to choir rehearsal. I am so exhausted from shoveling. Freaking snow.

December 22: More of that white crap fell last night. I have blisters on my hands from shoveling. I think the snowplow hides around the curve and waits until I'm done shoveling the driveway. THE JERK!

December 25: Merry Freaking Christmas. More stupid snow. If I ever get my hands on the jerk that drives that snowplow, I swear I'll throttle him. Don't know why they don't use more salt on the roads to melt the dastardly stuff.

December 27: More snow. Been inside for three days - except for shoveling the driveway after the snowplow goes through. Can't go anywhere - the car is stuck in a mountain of snow created by the winds blasting across the monotonous frozen lake. The weatherman says to expect another ten inches of the white stuff tonight. Do you have any idea how many shovels of snow ten inches is?

December 28: The stupid weatherman was wrong. We got two feet of that crap this time. At this rate, it won't melt before next summer. The snowplow got stuck in a drift and that jerk had the nerve to come to the door and ask to borrow my shovel! I told him that I had broken six shovels already shoveling all the garbage he pushed into the driveway. I used my last shovel to chase him off the property!

January 4: Finally got out of the driveway today. Went to the store to get food and on my way home a deer ran in front of my car and I hit it. Did $4000 damage to the car. Those freaking animals should be exterminated. Wish the hunters had got them all last November.

May 3: Took the car to the garage downtown. Would you believe the thing is rusted out from the stupid salt they put all over the roads.

May 10: House is on the market. Planning to move south to Arizona. I can't imagine why anyone in their right mind would ever live in the God Forsaken province of Ontario!

Enjoy your winter!

PS. Bought the wife a snowblower and still live in Cedar Glen. - Bill.
