Summertime
and the livin' is easy

We are attempting something new with this year with the Chorister: we are distributing a couple of issues exclusively on the Internet via e-mail and on our web site. This will enable us to save some money that we can use for other things to promote male voice singing and, if we get the content, to put a few more issues out.

There will be some problems as not all of our members have access, but we hope that the contact in each chorus will print a copy for those members. For associate members, we will send a mailing to get their e-mail addresses or to see if they prefer a hard copy.

This summer, I was hoping to do a lot more with the Chorister, but I got tied up with some tasks at work and (more importantly) spent some time with my family. My son and I spent a week at the Haliburton Scout Reserve (near Bill Bates). I was told to be the camp cook and so we started the Road Kill Grill offering dinner's more tender because they're scraped off the fender. The boys tend to eat everything if they think it's a bit disgusting. We sang every night and I hope that we have a few more choristers a couple of years down the road

My Agency has been heavily involved in doing work with farmers on the Plum Pox Virus and I have done some sampling in that regard. We had to take 12 leaves from every tree in the sample area and send them to be tested for the virus. If the test is positive, all trees in an area have to be destroyed. It looks like 40,000 trees have to be destroyed in the Niagara Peninsula.

I have also received a fair bit of e-mail regarding promotional activities of different organizations and I will be including links in this issue. These links will be a regular part of the Chorister in the future and I hope that you can send some that you might receive.

What I really need are your articles, comments and pictures. You will get pretty tired of my writing (if you aren't already) if that is all you get in the Chorister. Please send me anything.

Editor Receives Free CD

As the editor of the Chorister, I am on a number of e-mail lists and I often get notices of concerts and requests for help in promoting events and artists.

Over the summer, I received a free CD from an agent in the UK promoting a Welsh artist named Mal Pope. The CD consisted of three treatments of the song Guide Me Oh Thou Great Jehovah and was entitled Bread of Heaven. There was almost a calypso feel to the song and I rather enjoyed it.

The management firm was looking for potential venues for Mr. Pope to perform. The company is Elite Management (Sheila Willicombe) who can be reached at sheila.willicombe(A)swig-online.co.uk

Mal Pope can be reached at http://www.malpope.com

Kawartha Chorister is a Ham

How did people communicate around the world before the Internet?

How do people communicate in emergencies when the Internet is down and cell phones don't work?

Bill Bode of the Kawartha Male Chorus of Lindsay, Ontario will tell you it is with HAM Radio systems. The Lindsay paper, Lindsay This Week, did a feature on Bill in June and Bill Bates sent it along for our information.

Bill is a retired principal and the chair of the Victoria Haliburton Amateur Radio Association. The group assists police and emergency service providers in the Lindsay area during severe weather situations. I suspect they were also on hand at the turn of the odometer to 2000 in the event of other communication failures.

To get on the air requires more than just purchasing equipment. You must undergo training and write an exam before getting a license to operate.

Besides the service to the community, HAM operators enjoy the comradery of their fellow operators from around the world.

Maybe Bill could arrange a BIG Sing on the Air for us some year?

Chorister Editor Apologizes

It has come to my attention that one or two affiliates have not received recent issues of the Chorister. I apologize for this and I will strive to do better in the future. I would also like to thank Bill Bates for handling the matter with an affiliate member on my behalf. I have received a few mailings back and I will be going over my mailing list with Bill soon.
