AMCA Brief Notes
As Web Manager for AMCA, with this page I try to focus on or identify current items that may be of interest to the membership. I will place a brief description of and clickable links to items that may be of interest on this page. After the HOME PAGE and the Current News Page, this may be a source for finding new items on the AMCA web pages. Check it out once in a while!!!!
I will also try to help identify changes in format or location of items on the web pages. In that way, this page replaces the New Items page.
Your help is greatly appreciated in keeping me informed of AMCA, District or Choruses ACTIVITIES and INFORMATION CHANGES. If you care to share any information bits with the rest of us in AMCA, there are ways set up to do so or you can just send items directly to me, Web Manager.
I suggest, if you have "missed an item" as it appears one of the "current displays" (Events, Headlines, Highlights, News, etc.), with a little effort, you can usually find it in the INDEX OF HEADLINES & HIGHLIGHTS (Archives).

Topic: AMCA Update (for February 2006)
Date: Tuesday, 28 February 2006

There are several "items" this month that indicate positive "activity" in AMCofA.

     Volunteers
Ric Addenbrooke continues his excellent series of inspirational articles for AMCAers. See the most recent one where he indicates "... Volunteers Want The Job ..." placing a great deal of the future success of AMCA directly on the shoulder of people who "want to get the work done".
     New Chorister
Ed Armbruster has gathered together some reports from Rochester Male Chorus, Milwaukee Male Chorus and Eau Claire Male Chorus along with a resurrection of "Dr. Al Robertson's Program Notes" - (maybe we'll get a little info about Al Robertson in the next issue). All this is wrapped up with a hard copy print of the latest article by Chairman of the AMCA Council, Ric Addenbrooke.
     District News
NYP has lost their long time Secretary and Treasurer so they are short two district officers. Bill Seipel of UMW has favored us with Minutes of the Fall Meeting (2005). Bill faithfully delivers his minutes (with tech assistance of Roger Kees) after each meeting. )(/a) (Tom Farley always delivered very detailed minutes of what happened in NYP and Bill Bates minutes always helped the rest of us know what was going on the in the International workplace.) (/blockquote -->      Big Sings
There are Big Sings happening in Marshall, MN (UMW) and Negaunee, MI (WUM) in the coming months. Their music lists look interesting and activities are listed on their web pages.

     Chorus News
Staples Men's Chorus and Amherst Male Glee Club each have big events happening in the next month (March). See: Chorus News for details.
     Web Pages
I hope you noticed some updates/changes in the web pages in the past few months. Are they positive or negative updates/changes for you? I have had several positive comments from outside AMCA on the web pages but no comments from AMCAers. Hmmmmmm...

Topic: AMCA Update (for January 2006)
Date: Saturday, 28 January 2006

A Bit Of News From Eau Claire: Bob Wierman, Eau Claire Male Chorus President, gets us up-to-date with happenings in the ECMC... See: Chorus NOOZ
Attitude of Gratitude: There are good thoughts in the most recent article by Ric Addenbrooke and comments made by Bob Esko. I encourage any caring AMCAers to read these.
Chorister News: There is evidently a new Chorister being planned for publication SOON... IF there is news ... Why not contact Ed Armbruster with your chorus news.

Thanks for reading. If you care to share any information bits with the rest of us in AMCA, there are ways set up to do so or you can just send it to me, Web Manager, directly.

Topic: Someone Remembers!!!!
Date: January 25, 2006 2:07:36 PM CST

In answer to a request about Associated Glee Clubs of America recordings of the 20's, I have Swing Low and a number of others. This was submitted by James Price (2/7/05). I am planning to sell 78 RPM collection and am looking over ones that I think are not available on reprints and are still of interest. I have 17 other sides, most in fairly good shape. I could make a copy for Mr. Price at cost ( a few $'s). I would also consider selling the 78's but don't want to bother with shipping which probably rules that out. (Owen Miller)

Topic: AMCA Update (for December)
Date: Thursday, 29 December 2005

AMCA Executive Council Chair: I hope most of you have accessed/read the articles by the AMCA Executive Council Chair, Ric Addenbrooke. Ric is establishing a "higher profile" for his office as he desires to "inspire" some reactions from AMCA members. Please read his thoughts and support Ric as he leads us through this "time of change" in AMCA.

Report of the Executive Council Meeting: There is still only one official report available for the AMCA Executive Council Meeting on November 4, 2005. Paul Carlton has made a report as UMW Delegate to this meeting. We are still awaiting the official minutes for viewing on the web site.

Chorus Activities: I'm sure all choruses had extensive concerts during the Christmas season. How about sharing a few printed programs and/or communications about your chorus activities. Chorus NOOZ, Submit An Event or Submit News are convenient places to share your information. You may also just send me an email message with your information or to get my mailing address (for printed programs).

Topic: AMCA Update (for November)
Date: Tuesday, 29 November 2005

We have snow in Minnesota today but I have some "trips" to make so will have to venture out after all. (When one is "retired", the luxury is to usually be able to wait for a "better time" to do something (like nice weather). Oh well....)
There have been just two quick notes (for November). These two concern the happenings at the AMCA Executive Council Meeting on November 4. If you have missed them, here are links:
Paul Carlton submitted a written Report to the Upper Midwest District - Thanks Paul!
Jim Egan indicated that the Choral Composition Contest and Music Review areas of AMCA are under new (old) leadership. Welcome back Don!
That's all I have for now. Have a good one!
----
P.S. I noticed there has been some increased activity on the AMCA Polls (located on various web pages). The largest increase in participation this month -- "What Activity of AMCA is most important?" ... have you submitted an opinion yet? (Hint: You can see the results when you VOTE!)

Topic: Music Reviewer & Choral Composition Contest
Date: Saturday, 12 Nov 2005

I am pleased to announce that Donald W. Crouch has accepted the AMCA Board Appointed positions of Music Reviewer and Music Composition Contest. Don's experience with male chorus literature, his director experience with adult male choirs and his relationship with many publishers make Don an outstanding choice to fill these two positions.

Topic: Month-end Update from web manager
Date: Wed, 26 Oct 2005
From: David Thomas
-----
GET A LIFE
I may be one of a few that thinks AMCA can "have a life". I guess my minor contribution can be to not let a month go by without at least a minor bit of input to the membership (the ones that care to look at this page anyway).
I have no secret sources for information though so what they say "garbage in, garbage out" may be the situation here.
-----
FIRST ANNUAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING
We have received the planning agenda for the FIRST ANNUAL AMCA EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING to take place soon. We'll look forward to some happenings here!.
-----
BIG SINGS
Some feel that the activities of AMCA have been reduced to Big Sing gatherings. At this point, there seemes to be little initiative to attempt another "large scale" Big Sing. If activities have been reduced to Big Sings, which are district activities, the larger organization may have really lost some purpose.
There are District Big Sings scheduled in Lockport, NY, Negaunee, MI, Marshall, MN.
-----
POLLS ON THE WEB SITE
A few people have responded to the "interactive" polls on the web site. A chance has been provided to express a little bit of an opinion. Give 'em a try! Get involved (in a small way)!
If polls aren't for you, you can express individual opinions/thoughts on the Suggestions Page or send an email directly to an Executive Council Officer - Chairman, Executive Director; or to a District leader - NYP, UMW, WUM or to the Web Manager.
-----
SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2006-2007
Bob Torborg has the Scholarship area running again with plans to select candidates and award scholaship for the 2006-2007 school year. Some forms have been mailed directly and some of them are on the web pages. See From the Chair (Scholarship Chair that is) on the web pages for some continuing updates from the Scholarship chair.
-----
MUSIC FOCUS
Real Men Sing! - Stan Carlson in Staples, MN is working hard to inspire a whole new generation of young men singers. Fun music, terrific vocal clinicians for singers, strong outreach activities, etc.
Former AMCA Reviewer, Don Crouch, has surfaced again leading a different chorus, the South St. Paul Male Chorus in Minnesota (Don is back in his home state now).
-----
Another month has passed... had my roof replaced, new electrical service installed, and new furnace on the way. People in the south do not need furnaces but they sure need alot of other things after the natural disasters of this season. Right now the leaves are beautiful on the golf courses in Minnesota but make the ball hard to find if you get off the fairway as I usually do. 'Till later!

Topic: Updates??? from the web manager
Date: Fri, 30 Sep 2005
From: David Thomas

Well, September has come to it's "quiet" close (leaves are already starting to turn beautiful fall colors in Minnesota) and this is the best update I have for you.

1- Change Your Bookmarks/Favorites/Links: Don't forget the "downsizing/reorganization" of the AMCA website. Change your bookmarks or links from the "amcofa.org" server to the "amcofa.net" server. The "amcofa.org" server will be discontinued and the AMCA web pages will be "lost to you" without this change.

2- First AMCA Executive Council: The 1st AMCA Executive Council meeting to take place in Lockport, NY in November. Stay tuned --

3- Fall Startup 2005: Only a couple of "startup news bits" are shared with us on the web pages. There are two quick items from Cold Spring and Eau Claire choruses in the UMW District.

4- Are we leaner and active or just leaner?: It seems that we are functioning now with a totally downsized AMCA (as George Pecor, Past President once stated). There are only three districts remaining with a total of 26 choruses (including student choruses in Jamestown and Eau Claire and the "are they a member" chorus in Winnipeg).

5- Big Sings: Big Sing activities will take place this fall in the NYP District (Big Sing in November 2005). UMW Big Sing in Spring 2006 and WUM Big Sing in April or May 2006.

Thanks for reading. If you care to share any information bits with the rest of us in AMCA, there are ways set up to do so or you can just click the link, Web Manager, and send it to me directly.

Topic: Tax Exempt Status - Another Look from a Professional!
Date: Mon, 29 Aug 2005 14:59:55 -0400
From: Paul Hassett

I just ran through the accumulation of "quickies" after reviewing the info about George Pecor.

Several messages about tax exemption and 501(c) status apparently came in last winter and the tax advice given in response was inaccurate. The whole issue of our "blanket" exemption is a complicated subject and I frankly don't know what it means and neither does anyone else. Bill Bates and I have had several discussions on the subject and without a copy of our application for exemption (which is nowhere to be found) I don't think anyone can tell to whom our Determination Letter applies. Ric Addenbrooke is also fairly familiar with the problem.

On thing is clear: the tax-exempt status is a function of Federal Law but it requires some state law application relating to organization and operation of a particular chorus. In addition, exemption from income tax by an organization does not guarantee that contributions to that organization are tax deductible by the donor. That's a different issue and doesn't necessarily follow.

The best advice I can give to anyone wondering about our exempt status and its application to individual choruses is to consult an attorney well-versed in this area of the law and not to pay any attention to what you've heard from others.

Regards,
Paul Hassett
AMCA Counsel

At 8:21 AM -0500 8/30/05, Paul Hassett wrote:
... my purpose (for above message) was twofold: to clear up some misimpressions that others have created and to discourage others from offering advice when they are not qualified to do so. When I have a little time, I can explain why the problem exists and leave it to the executive whether it's worthwhile trying to fix it. One of the basic issues involves whether each individual chorus is organized and operated in a manner that qualifies it to come under the AMCA tent in the first place. Another is what our Determination Letter means in referring to AMCA's "affiliates."

George Pecor

Very sad news ... George Pecor fell down the basement steps last night, hit his head on the floor, was rushed to the hospital and did not make it through surgery.

That's all that is known right now ... check back and more info will be displayed as it becomes available.

Keep the family in your prayers!

Topic: Some Activity!!!
Date: August 15, 2005

Two New Directors
New directors have been selected at Milwaukee and South St. Paul. Don Crouch, former Milwaukee Male Chorus Director, moved to Minnesota and was contacted by the South St. Paul Male Chorus to replace their director (for one year) Patti Bjorklund who resigned just recently. The Milwaukee Male Chorus had to replace their long-time director, Don Crouch, and selected Rob Clark. Contact information for these people can be located in the AMCA Directory and/or in the AMCA Online Database. Welcome!

First Communication from AMCA Executive
There is some word from the AMCA Executive Council as the reorganization process is taking place. Ric Addenbrooke, Lock City Glee Club and President of the NYP District, has been chosen to lead AMCA as the Chairman of the Executive Council. Ric has written and article to let AMCAers know a bit about the reorganization process. I hope you will read A Year-end Viewpoint (end of the fiscal year is the intention) by Ric Addenbrooke. Thanks Ric for the update.

Topic: Downsize - Phase Out!
Date: July 29, 2005

The web site is going through some downsizing phases in preparation for a (possible) later shut down.
The amcofa.org server will be shut down. I am in the process of moving files and changing links to reflect such. If you get a broken link, just have patience. Links will be changed as I discover them. (There are many to change.) If you use stored bookmarks or favorites on your own computer, change them to the correct (amcofa.net) server.
I started the AMCA web pages when the Internet was in "infancy" (around 1994) and have continued to provide free services to AMCA as the internet has gained more acceptance. There has been much growth in this wonderful electronic medium. It is hoped the AMCAers will get more involved in using it.
Topic: Nothing new in some time!
Date: July 19, 2005

I know it is summer and most AMCA Male Choruses are "off".
There has been no new information for the AMCA web site in sometime from anyone. (You can "Reload" / "Refresh" your browser all you want and no new information will magically appear right now.)
(I hope you have learn this "computer skill" when you think information might not be current on a web page - hold down the control and shift key and click the Refresh/Reload icon on a Windows computer - hold down the command and the shift key and click the Refresh/Reload icon on a Mac computer).

There are 13 photos/clipping at this time but he promises to upload more so check back once in a while to this interesting presentation. I prefer the high quality individual photos but also like the way one can see a Slideshow (with the correct browser) of all of the pictures. Thanks much Bruce for sharing these items with AMCA!!

Topic: Domain Name - amcachorus.org
Date: May 28, 2005

It seems like it is no longer needed, so to save the expense of renewal, I have decided to "release" this domain name. "Releasing the Domain Name" means that it will become available for others to use and it will NO LONGER WORK FOR AMCA.
If you have bookmarked any pages that incorporate the (amcachorus.org) domain name, they will no longer work after the "release date" on August 14, 2005.
Also included are any subdomain links (i.e. scholarship.amcachorus.org) or any email aliases that incorporate this domain name (i.e. scholarship@amcachorus.org).
See: Email Address that are not affected by this "release of domain name"!

Topic: Series of new pages added
Date: May 23, 2005

A series of new pages have been added to the AMCA web site to help in navigation to special interest areas. I hope you will try them out
Each district now has a starting page where all district links should be available. (See shortcuts below.)
There is a current news page for all districts and international.
The Brief Choruses page and Brief Officers page include some quick convenient links to contact information.
If you are looking for historial or archived items, I suggest that you start with the Archive Index
Of course, this page (AMCA Recent Brief Notes) has been added to help draw your attention to new and recent items added to the web site. The most recent items are near the top in "blog" style. This page should be a good starting point for "frequent visitors" to the AMCA web site to access items that may have been added since the last visit.

Personal note from Dave (AMCA Web Manager):
I have enjoyed working with the AMCA and with the AMCA web site for many years. Some of you have just "gotten used to" the web site as being automatically there (I started it from nothing). Some of you have yet to discover the AMCA web site.
The web pages are created by a "human being" who likes other human beings. There are ways to react to items on the web page in many situations. If you do care to get "in touch" with a fellow human being, please do so. I would enjoy hearing from you (about anything). Let me know what you think!!!

I have been informed that Bob Torborg of the Cold Spring Maennerchor, Cold Spring, MN is the new Scholarship Chair. Check the Scholarship Page for any new updates on the Scholarship offering (you can contact Bob with the "Contact" link on that page). I don't know if scholarships will be awarded for 2006-2006 or if this "mixed up year" for AMCA will just be skipped. Scholarships have been awarded continuously since the 1980-81 season and there is money in the Scholarship Fund for scholarships. The problem has been lack of leadership to "get the job done".

Since the AMCA Executive Secretary has resigned (also a member of GLMCA), the Music Reviewer and Music Contest Chair has resigned, the Scholarship Chair is a member of GLMCA, and the International Officers position have changed due to the new By-Laws, I have asked several questions on their status in AMCA. Stay tuned... I'll try to keep it updated if I can. (Web Manager)
Topic: Status Topics
Date: Sat, 12 Feb 2005 15:23:19 EST

1- Has anything happened on replacements for Executive Secretary and Music Chair for the International?

... still trying to interest some people in the positions. ... one recommended for Scholarship chair might be a better candidate for Executive Director... The Music Reviewer position will transition to a leader plus representatives from each district.
2- Is any news on the the Spring Meeting of the International. The Fall Minutes states, "The next meeting will be established by the new council and will be published as soon as available." Has the "council" met or discussed things?
No meeting will be set until AMCA Attorney has completed the work on the by-laws.
3- Is any kind of Chorister publication still going to happen???
Yes there will be a Chorister... the editor is pushing to get some information together to put an issue out.
4- Are there going to be Scholarships awarded this Spring (2005)??
5- Is there going to be a Music Contest award made this Spring (2005)?
At this point, I would say no to either.

When I was a child there was an old 78 rpm record of the "Associated Glee Clubs of America" performing at the Philadelphia Sesquicentennial celebration. The choral music was marvellous and snippets of it have remained with me throughout these many decades.
Does anywone know if recordings of this even still exist and how I may obtain copies? (From: James Price)
